Akcja rozgrywa się w XIX wieku, w końcu lat sześćdziesiątych. Wśród marynarzy szerzy się wieść o pojawianiu się wśród wód oceanów niezwykłego wieloryba, który dziwił ich nie tylko swoimi rozmiarami, ale także szybkością i nieuchwytnością.
Pochodzący z Francji przyrodnik Pierre Aronnax (Paul Lukas) wyrusza na amerykańskiej fregacie rozwiązać tą niezwykłą zagadkę. W wyprawie towarzyszy mu jego służący Conseil (Peter Lorre). Podczas tej niezwykłej przygody poznają porywczego, lecz doskonałego w swoim fachu harpunnika o imieniu Ned Land (Kirk Douglas). Profesor Aronnax wraz z towarzyszami wkrótce odkrywa tajemnicę i spotyka tajemniczego człowieka - kapitana Nemo (James Mason).

The action takes place in the nineteenth century, at the end of the sixties. A rumor spreads among sailors about the appearance of an unusual whale among the waters of the oceans, which surprised them not only with its size, but also with its speed and elusiveness.
Naturalist Pierre Aronnax (Paul Lukas) from France sets out on an American frigate to solve this extraordinary mystery. He is accompanied on his journey by his servant Conseil (Peter Lorre). On this extraordinary adventure, they meet a hot-headed but excellent harpooner named Ned Land (Kirk Douglas). Professor Aronnax and his companions soon unravel the mystery and meet a mysterious man - Captain Nemo (James Mason).
